What should a 7 year old be drawing? 7-year-old children are at the end of the so-called Pre-Schematic and at the beginning of the Schematic drawing stage.

These are the stages where children start adding elements of realism and logic to their drawings.

For example, a flower in front of a house (Pre-Schematic) or seagulls, seashells, and other sea-related elements when drawing the ocean.

Some children might also add some words and symbols. Others might start using perspective by drawing some elements bigger than others.

At this age, children can easily make the following shapes in their drawings (1).

  1. Circles
  2. Squares
  3. Rectangles
  4. Triangles
  5. Diamonds in their drawings

The following are some of the main characteristics of 7-year-old kids when drawing (2):

  • Use symbols for people and objects
  • Development of a baseline
  • Emphasize important features
  • Show multiple perspectives at the same time
  • X-ray drawings
